Hamburg

The day before yesterday, we made our final explorations in Berlin before heading out to Hamburg. We finally made it to a highly recommended club, Club der Visionaere, but it wasn't as happening on a sunday afternoon as it probably was the night before. It's typically a place to go right on the river when the heat of the summer is upon Berlin.


It seemed as though this area of Berlin is the "warehouse rave" district. People were milling about just outside of old industrial buildings as if it were Friday night, with techno bumping inside. We found some installations like this bench and these old cars covered in astroturf.




Then we were off to Hamburg to visit Anke and Michael. Anke was my family's German exchange student when I was in High School. She came out to L.A. a year ago for our wedding, so it was great to finally see her and have some time to hang out.

When we arrived, a delicious meal of homemade German Rouladen, red cabbage, and potatoe dumplings was waiting for us. We slept as sound as stuffed pigs.

The next morning, Anke and Michael showed us some of their favorite spots, starting with a trip to Lübek. Their adorable Golden Retriever puppy, Freida, got to ride in the very back.



Lübek is known for its marzipan and it has buildings that are 600 years old, like this old town hall and market square.



And this old city gate, which used to be one of the only ways out of the city walls.



Then we got back in the car with Freida and headed to the Baltic Sea.



This beach on the Baltic is a popular vacation spot during the summer and felt sort of like an east coast beach community.



Then it was back to Hamburg to check out the ports, which act as the hub of trading for much of Europe.



And then to a Greek taverna for some delicious foods and beer from the western ends of Germany.



This morning, we are going to be exploring Hamburg a bit further and checking out some of the more unique museums they have here.
